01Antiquity

Lutetia, between island and riverbank.

Before Paris, there was Lutetia. The Gallo-Roman settlement developed around the Seine, the Île de la Cité and the Montagne Sainte-Geneviève. The Cluny baths and the Arènes de Lutèce still preserve the visible memory of this first urban landscape.

The river was already a route for travel, commerce and encounters. It shaped a city that learned very early to live between its two banks — a geography that remains central to Parisian identity.

02The Middle Ages

Paris becomes a capital.

Under the Capetian dynasty, Paris gradually asserted its political role. Royal power, religious institutions, markets and the University attracted a growing population. Philip II Augustus built a city wall, strengthened the Louvre and gave Paris a new scale.

Around Notre-Dame, Les Halles and the university quarters, Paris became the capital of the kingdom, an intellectual centre and a city of craftspeople. Its narrow streets still carry the outline of a city built in successive layers.

03Renaissance–18th century

A city of palaces, squares and perspectives.

The Renaissance and then the Grand Siècle transformed Paris. The Louvre expanded, private mansions multiplied in the Marais and new royal squares brought order to the urban space. Bridges, gardens and façades gradually composed a distinctly French idea of perspective.

Even after the royal court moved to Versailles, Paris remained a political, artistic and intellectual centre. Salons, theatres, cafés and workshops prepared the city of the Enlightenment — curious about the world and always ready to discuss it.

041789–1848

The capital of revolutions.

In 1789, Paris became one of the principal stages of the French Revolution. The storming of the Bastille, popular uprisings and major political debates permanently inscribed the city in the nation’s history.

The nineteenth century continued through changes of regime, insurrections and revolutions. Paris transformed without losing the tension between authority, the street and the ideal. Its monuments became witnesses to political as well as architectural memory.

051853–1870

Haussmann opens the city.

Under Napoleon III, Prefect Georges-Eugène Haussmann directed vast public works. Wide avenues connected neighbourhoods, new systems modernised water and sanitation, while parks, railway stations and orderly façades gave Paris a new silhouette.

The transformation was sometimes brutal for older districts, but it also created a new way of moving through the city. Open perspectives and grand boulevards soon formed the ideal setting for fiacres, omnibuses and the first motor cars.

06Belle Époque

Paris discovers speed and light.

At the turn of the twentieth century, Paris welcomed World’s Fairs, the Métro, electricity and the motor car. The Eiffel Tower, grand hotels, cafés, theatres and couture houses created an image of modernity that fascinated far beyond France.

The driver appeared beside the first cars in this changing city. The profession required knowledge of mechanics, boulevards, elegant addresses and the customs of a society in motion. Paris and the history of private chauffeur service began to echo one another.

After the war, the metropolitan region expanded, uses of the street changed and traffic became one of the defining subjects of Parisian life. Neighbourhoods evolved, while each preserved its own particular way of inhabiting the city.
